The Secret Journey from Dwaraka to Udupi

How a sacred treasure once cherished in Dwaraka crossed the sea, reached the shores of Malpe, and became the beloved Sri Krishna of Udupi.

Gokul → Dwaraka → The Sea → Malpe → Udupi

Udupi holds a secret treasure passed from Dwaraka.

Most visitors know Udupi for the world-famous Sri Krishna Matha. But behind the temple lies a deeper story — a sacred journey that begins with Mother Yashoda’s love, passes through Queen Rukmini’s devotion in Dwaraka, survives beneath the sea for centuries, and is finally revealed on the shores of Malpe through Sri Madhvacharya.

This is the story of how Dwaraka is connected to Udupi.

Scene 01

A mother’s loving hands

The story begins not with a temple, but with a mother’s love. In the warm kitchens of Gokul, Mother Yashoda lovingly churned fresh butter every day. She knew her little Krishna loved butter more than anything in the world. Every pot she filled carried a mother’s love.

He opened chests overflowing with gold, pearls, rubies, emeralds and precious jewels. “You saved my ship and all our lives,” he said. “Please accept these treasures as my humble offering.” But Madhvacharya sought no wealth.

Instead, the saint calmly asked for the two great blocks of Gopichandana clay being carried in the ship.

The merchant was astonished. Why would a great saint refuse priceless riches and ask instead for ordinary blocks of clay? Yet, out of deep reverence and gratitude, he did not question the saint. He respectfully ordered the Gopichandana blocks to be brought ashore.

One was Balakrishna, the playful child Krishna holding the kadagol — the very idol once cherished by Rukmini and protected beneath the sea after Dwaraka disappeared. The other was Lord Balarama, Krishna’s elder brother. The merchant now understood why the saint had refused his jewels. The true treasure was never gold. It was the sacred inheritance of Dwaraka, now revealed on the shore of Malpe.

Sri Madhvacharya directed that both sacred idols be taken to Udupi. But at Malpe, something extraordinary happened. No matter who tried, the idol of Lord Balarama could not be moved any further. The saint understood this as a divine sign. Lord Balarama had chosen to remain at that sacred spot on the shore. Madhvacharya consecrated the Balarama idol at Malpe, establishing the ancient Vadabhandeshwara Balarama Temple. He then carried the beloved Balakrishna idol to Udupi and installed Him at the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, where millions of devotees continue to receive His blessings even today.
